Art for the Pain Cave
Something worth staring at when the intervals bite.
This collection started life exactly where you're planning to put it: on the wall above an indoor trainer. Several of these paintings hang in my own pain cave, and they've absorbed more threshold sessions than any artwork should have to.
The right pain cave art does a job. Faces of effort, forward motion, riders deeper in the red than you are — something to lock eyes with in the last minute of an interval, when the numbers stop being encouraging. The thick impasto paint helps: it catches the light differently every session.
One practical note from experience: hang the canvas just out of sweat-splash range. These are oils, not wipe-clean posters.
